Flint water drives
Our founder, Barb Barton, began working in Flint in January of 2016 as a volunteer for the American Red Cross, going door to door delivering water and filters to folks in the northside of Flint. Two weeks later, she joined Crossing Water and began volunteering at a water distribution site at St. Mary's Catholic Church on weekends and holiday. Barb brought a truckload of water every time she went, and Love from Lansing was born. In the summer of 2016, the State of Michigan created water distribution hubs at several locations around the city, including a hub one block from St. Mary's. Our little distribution site soon closed.
In the winter of 2018, Love from Lansing restarted our water drives because the State stopped giving out free bottled water to Flint's residents and there was still a great need. Our water is delivered to a church where volunteers from Crossing Water take the cases along with other supplies to homes of the disabled, elderly, and others in need. Whenever Crossing Water does a deployment of their Rapid Response Teams, Love from Lansing is there to proved the water.
Our team of drivers is composed of a few big-hearted folks in Lansing and even more who come from Ann Arbor, Mt. Pleasant, Howell, and Ypsilanti. They donate their time, their trucks, their bodies, and their cash to make our deliveries successful! We deliver anywhere from 3 pallets to 7 pallets of water, depending on how generous the donations are. That is 234-546 cases!
Many folks bring up the issue of all those plastic bottles. Believe us when we tell you, we DO NOT like using bottled water. None of us buy it in our personal lives. We are sickened by the plastic pollution in our environment. And we truly wish there was a better way to bring water to the people. But unfortunately, there isn't. Some ask why we don't take five gallon jugs, or gallon jugs to eliminate the bottles. Remember who are clients are. Elderly and disabled. Many cannot handle the weight of anything much larger than a few water bottles.
We are grateful for the support of Maria and her staff at Office Max in Lansing for giving us a discount on water, and to Two Men and a Truck, who donate trucks and drivers to deliver your donated water all the way to Flint from Lansing. Also, a big thanks to Sunrise Lansing for conducting water drives on their own and bring us their bounty, which we in turn take to Flint. This is the meaning of community!
All of our donations come from YOU, and without you, there could be no Love from Lansing. So thank you for caring for our neighbors in Flint!
